Eating plant derived “good fats” such as coconut oil and cocoa butter reduces symptoms of Chrohn’s Disease say researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.
Researchers said in their discovery that this type of high fat diet “may lead to specific changes in gut bacteria that could fight harmful inflammation — a major discovery for patients suffering from Crohn’s disease.”
In the study, mice fed even low amounts of coconut oil or cocoa butter had less small intestine inflammation.
Just by switching from “bad” fats to “good” fats Crohn’s patients can see a beneficial change in their gut bacteria and inflammation.
The researchers indicated that patients will have varying results, but they estimate that many will see the benefits of a healthier microbiome “without the side-effects and risks carried by drugs.”
